[autrement, la molussie]
nicolas rey | france, 2012 | 81'
an extraordinary literary adaptation, based on fragments from "die molussische katakombe" (1931-38), a dystopian novel about an imaginary fascist state and the only fictional work by the philosopher günther anders (1902-1992; born günther stern, he was a cousin of walter benjamin and the first husband of hannah arendt).
what makes the film extraordinary is first of all that the director nicolas rey (b. 1968, founder of the experimental film-laboratory l'abominable) had not read the source novel when he embarked on the project, as it was not available in any language that he knew (he would learn german and get to know the text in detail during the filmmaking process); secondly, the finished film is delivered on nine 16mm reels, which are to be rearranged in a random order before each screening - adding up to a total of 362,880 different possible versions of the film, making it highly likely that the one we will see is a world-premiere of this particular configuration...
the other work in this screening is no less remarkable: finnish documentary and essay-film master kanerva cederström (b. 1949) will present a premiere of her new "film-esquisse" the third reich of dreams (2024), based on charlotte beradt's 1968 book of the same name, where the author collected the dreams and nightmares of ordinary german people between 1933-1939. we are extremely honoured to host this first glimpse of this fascinating project in the presence of the director!
