thomas bernhard - drei tage

ferry radax | austria, 1970 | 58'

austrian director ferry radax (1932-2021) filmed the writer thomas bernhard (1931-1989) for three days in early june, 1970, delivering a monologue on a park bench in ohlsdorf, hamburg. the infamously reclusive writer was so taken with the filmmaker and his spontaneous approach that he immediately wanted to write a feature film for him (which became the italian, 1972). the original interview film has remained an outstanding document of bernhard's personality, as the characteristically sombre subject matter familiar to his readers gets contrasted with radax's freewheeling filmmaking style - and the occasionally surprising glimpses and juxtapositions it provides.
