short films: text
marc adrian / jörg piringer / anton nikkilä | austria / finland, 1963-2019 | 50'
in our opening screening, we will start with the absolute basics when it comes to text and cinema: three different approaches to making a film out of nothing but white text on a black background, whether forming sentences, individual words, syllables, or even just configurations of individual characters. first off, two seminal films by austrian pioneer of (among other things) computer-assisted filmmaking marc adrian (1930-2008); then some character-animations / digital poetry improvisations by his younger compatriot, jörg piringer (b. 1974); and finally the finnish premiere of the oberhausen 2018 -premiered english-language version of anton nikkilä's (b. 1965) literal translations, a 30-minute semi-abstract narrative consisting of nothing but intertitles, subtitles and sound, in a remarkable feat of imageless filmmaking. welcome to metakino!
